🎙️ Episode 108. Weight loss drugs, negative self-talk & a bunch more.

This week a listener question came through that really sparked my interest.

Duromine. A weight loss drug prescribed to patients who are considered overweight or obese.

Now, this is not my field of expertise as I am not a medical doctor. However, I decided to do some digging... a lot of digging.

In the past, I have had clients who were proscribed with similar appetite suppressant drugs to help them lose weight.

And the things they experienced were not pleasant; depression, massive mood swings, difficulty sleeping, skin conditions, constipation, loss of appetite, lack of energy to exercise, lack of energy to get out of bed, and the list goes on.

My problem with it is a lot of the time (not all of the time), overeating isn't caused by the feeling of hunger but by behaviour. By your habits. Just because you aren't physically hungry does not mean you won't eat.

My other concern is what happens when you stop taking the drug. You won't magically have less appetite. There will no longer be something stopping you from feeling hungry, and you will still have the same habits...

On a lighter note, Jack raised the question, why do we say "not bad" to the question "how are you?"

Why are we only not bad? Why is it wrong to say we are good or even great?

This habit can easily carry over into our language in other areas of our life. If you aren't saying you are good when life is good, what else are you thinking about yourself out of habit?

We all hear about the power of affirmations. Affirmations can get you whatever you want right? Just say it enough times, and it will magically happen.

We have both recently taken a new approach to this mindset.

Jack has been practising saying “I am successful because...”

“I am healthy because...”

Without showing yourself evidence of why you are or will be the person you want to be, the affirmations have little to no meaning.

On the other hand, I have been journaling in the third person. Sounds weird, I know. But we are our own biggest critics, so sometimes saying "I am x, y, z" can lose its meaning. Whereas reading, writing or saying something like "Mack, you are doing great" feels different. Almost like it is more believable.

Listen to this week's podcast for a more in-depth conversation about self-talk.

Listener questions:

How can I enjoy the gym when I hate my body?
