Life satisfaction study

Satisfied yet striving: Gratitude fosters life satisfaction and improves motivation in youth.

Can writing gratitude letters for just 10 minutes a week make a difference in our lives? To find out, researchers worked with over 1,000 students. They divided the students into two groups. One group wrote gratitude letters to their parents, teachers, coaches, or friends for four weeks, while also doing other gratitude activities. The other group focused on organizing their daily activities without gratitude exercises.

The results showed that the students in the gratitude group felt better about their lives and were more motivated to improve themselves compared to the control group. These positive effects lasted throughout the semester. The students' motivation to improve and their satisfaction with life were influenced by feeling connected to others, being inspired by them, and feeling grateful for their help.

The decline in energy expenditure

Total daily energy expenditure has declined over the past three decades due to declining basal expenditure, not reduced activity expenditure.

The decline in total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) over the past three decades is primarily due to a decrease in basal energy expenditure rather than a reduction in activity expenditure.

Several factors could contribute to changes in basal energy expenditure over time. One such factor is changes in body composition, including alterations in muscle mass and fat mass. Muscle is a metabolically active tissue that requires more energy to maintain than fat. Therefore, an increase in body fat and a decrease in muscle mass could lead to a decline in basal energy expenditure.
